DUI Misconceptions

When it comes to drinking and driving, many people are under-educated. Unfortunately, this can lead to real trouble later on. Here are the facts behind some of the most popular DUI-related urban myths.

If I use mouthwash, it will mask the alcohol on my breath and fool the tests.

FALSE. Not for a second! Breathalyzers measure the alcohol particles in your lungs, not the freshness of your breath. Even if you fool the officer with your minty smile, you can’t fool the machine. In fact, in some cases, using mouthwash may even backfire—formulas like Listerine contain alcohol, and residual mouthwash on your breath can push Breathalyzer readings well over the legal limit even if you’re not really at 0.08%.

If I eat a lot, it will absorb the alcohol and I can’t get drunk.

FALSE. While it’s true that food in your stomach can absorb alcohol up to a point, it will still be released into your bloodstream sometime. Drinking a lot of alcohol will still get you drunk no matter how much you’ve had to eat—it just won’t get you drunk quite as fast as if you’d been drinking on an empty stomach.

If I get too drunk, a cup of coffee or a cold shower will sober me right up.

FALSE. The caffeine in coffee and the shock to the system of a cold shower are both definite pick-me-ups. One thing they won’t do, however, is eliminate alcohol from your bloodstream any faster. Coffee or a shower might help you feel more alert, but this is actually even more dangerous, for the alertness could make you feel as though you’re ready to drive when you’re really not. The only thing that can get rid of alcohol is time.

I can’t afford an attorney.

FALSE. Consider this: if you are convicted of DUI, you could face up to $2,500 in fines plus court fees and surcharges. You will have to sign up for SR-22 high risk car insurance, with considerably raised fees. DUI School and having your license reinstated both cost money. Jail time and a suspended license could put your job in jeopardy, and a mark on your criminal record can make it more difficult to find another job later on. With all of this on the table, you can’t afford to not have the best attorney you can find.

Any attorney will do.
